The character鸡（jī）was first seen in oracle bone inscriptions . The original meaning of chicken refers to a kind of poultry.It eventually became one of the Chinese zodiacs.
闻鸡起舞 (wén jī qǐ wǔ)
Literally, get up and dance with the sword when you hear the rooster. Later, it was used as a metaphor for those who have aspirations to serve the country, will eventually rise up in their time.
鸡毛蒜皮 (jī máo suàn pí)
Literally, “Chicken feather and garlic skin”. A metaphor for trivial things that don’t matter.
鸡飞蛋打 (jī fēi dàn dǎ)
Literally, the chicken flew away and the egg broke. It is an analogy of losing at both ends and gaining nothing.
