As in many countries wine is a popular drink favored by many people as a means of expressing joy and happiness or relieving from pressure and sadness. Our word of this week is 酒 – ‘wine’.
酒 is pronounced jiǔ,
酒(jiǔ) originally means alcohol-containing beverages made by fermenting grains and fruits. It can be extended to a verb, which refers to drinking.
喜酒 – xǐjiǔ
Wedding wine: wine used in a wedding banquet.
滴酒不沾 – dī jiǔ bù zhān
Refers to a person who never drinks.
酒鬼 – jiǔguǐ
Alcoholic, a person who is addicted to wine drinking.
